Nicaragua is a country in the Central America on the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It has had a turbulent history, with frequent intervention by foreign powers. Managua is the capital and the largest city.
Nicaragua's western half consists of thickly forested mountain ranges and fertile valleys. Parallel to the Pacific coast is a belt of 40 dormant and active volcanoes. The eastern coastline along the Caribbean Sea is known as the Mosquito Coast. Earthquakes are common and sometimes severe. The colonial city of Granada is the preferred spot for tourists. Ecotourism and surfing attract many tourists to Nicaragua. Another popular destination is the Corn Islands located about 70 km east off the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. They have been regarded as a "tropical paradise" by the Los Angeles Times. Cruise ships have been docking in since January 2000 and visitors partake in tours to the nearby Lake Cocibolca and the colonial city of Granada.
