Ireland, popularly known as the Emerald Isle, is an island in the northern Atlantic Ocean and west of Great Britain. It has been divided politically since 1920 between the independent Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom.
It is one of the greenest countries and the people are renowned for their friendliness. It has a vibrant capital, Dublin, which has spearheaded a dramatic period of economic growth that has seen the country transformed from a rural island to the envy of Europe. Ireland's hills are a walker's paradise, not only because of the extensive network of trails, but because by the lakes and rivers and the coastal views. Watersports such as sailing and surfing are popular too, and many visitors come for the golf. The Irish are also very passionate with horses- there is a potential Derby winner in every valley and a packed betting shop in every high street.
