India, one of the oldest civilizations in the world, lies in South Asia, between Pakistan, China and Nepal. To the north it is bordered by the world's highest mountain chain, the Himalayas, where foothill valleys cover the northernmost of the country's 26 states. At the southern tip of India, plateaus, tropical rain forests and sandy deserts are bordered by palm fringed beaches. India is the seventh largest country in the world and has become self-sufficient in agricultural production and is also the tenth industrialized country in the world.
It is a land where temple elephants exist amicably with modernity. India is also home to the famous Taj Mahal. India's mountains provide heli-skiing, river running, mountaineering and trekking. Its beaches provide lazy sun-bathing as well as wind surfing and snorkeling, and its jungles provide shooting wildlife with a camera.
