Guadeloupe, an archipelago of nine inhabited islands including Basse-Terre, Grande-Terre, Marie-Galante, and Saint-Martin among others, has been a French possession since 1635. Since it is an overseas possession of France, expect sumptuous French cuisine and tasteful surroundings when you visit the country.
This butterfly-shaped island is home to the La Soufriere (Sulphur) Volcano, rising to 4,977 feet. All around are the Botanical Gardens and Parc National with a virgin rainforest, spectacular waterfalls, and canyon routes. This vast jungle overlooks the deep-blue waters which gave the island the name Karukera, believed to mean "island of beautiful waters."
