Formerly British Honduras, Belize is a country in Central America that was once part of the Mayan civilization and the British Empire until it gained its independence in 1981. The country is bordered to the south and west by Guatemala, to the north by Mexico and the Caribbean Sea to the east. It is the only country in Central America where English is the official language.
A combination of natural factors—the tropical climate, the Belize Barrier Reef which is the longest in the Western Hemisphere and the 127 offshore cays make Belize the perfect island getaway. Tourists may engage themselves in fishing, boating the safe waters, scuba diving and snorkeling. There are also a number of rivers for rafting and kayaking, wildlife reserves of fauna and flora for hiking, bird watching and exploring the Mayan ruins.
